A proficiency test must be taken within two years of gaining the full qualification, and thereafter within every 12 months for the qualification holder to be considered to be proficient.
Course Units and Contents (Lifeguard):
- Swim 400m in 7min30s (Surf Lifeguard)
- Swim 400m in 8mins (Beach Lifeguard)
- Run 200m in 40s.
- Releases
- Unconscious tube or board rescue
- Spinal extraction from the water or a first aid incident
- Adult choking and CPR (theory and practical)

- Run 200m in 60s.
- Spinal extraction from the water or a first aid incident
- Adult choking and CPR (theory and practical)
- Assisting a lifeguard and after care
Pre-requisites:
The award must be valid and in date at the time of the proficiency test for the award that is being taken.
Course duration:
This course will run for 2 days, the first of which will be a training full day and will cover the majority of the aspects of the lifeguard/lifeguard support proficiency test criteria. Day 2 will consist of the assessment
